M'sia to ban foreign debit & credit cards at M'sia RON95 pumps from next week
The use of foreign cards will be limited to over-the-counter transactions and not at the pump.
Malaysia will begin phasing out the use of foreign credit and debit cards for RON95 petrol purchases at petrol stations.
Starting on Apr. 1, the approach is meant to strengthen enforcement and prevent the misuse of the Malaysian-subsidised petrol.
The rollout is expected to be conducted in stages, according to Malay Mail.
Azman Adam, enforcement director-general of Malaysia's Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry, told New Straits Times that the move would also ease the burden on operators.
Foreign card payments allowed at counter
Azman said that the new system will automatically filter transactions.
He said several firms are already fully prepared to implement the mechanism.
Azman added that the use of foreign cards will be limited to over-the-counter transactions and not at the pump.
"This measure is intended to facilitate monitoring by petrol station operators and enforcement authorities, while ensuring compliance with existing regulations."
He said that there are many cases of vehicles with foreign registration plates refuelling using foreign debit or credit cards at self-service pumps, reported Malay Mail.
He noted that this made it difficult for operators and authorities to detect such purchases.
