The fares for the new Johor–Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) are expected to be announced in the second half of 2026, and could cost around S$5 to S$7 (RM15.50 to RM21.70) per trip, Malaysia’s Transport Minister Loke Siew Fook said.

Speaking to Sin Chew Daily, Loke noted that while RTS fares will not be as cheap as Kuala Lumpur’s public transport, they would still be more cost-effective than commuting across the border to Singapore by car.

He explained that fares are jointly set by RTS Operations, a joint venture between Malaysia's Prasarana Malaysia Berhad and Singapore's SMRT Corporation, which follows commercial principles.

"The Singapore government will not provide subsidies, so the operating model must ensure sustainable development," he said.

On whether monthly passes and discounts will be offered, Loke said the Malaysia government will not subsidise Singaporean commuters, making such schemes difficult to implement.

Loke highlighted that Singapore-registered vehicles entering Malaysia currently pay a RM20 (S$6.48) toll, of which RM5 (S$1.62) goes to the Johor state government and RM15 (S$ 4.86) to the federal government.

This toll alone brings in around RM70 million (S$22.67 million) in annual revenue for Johor alone.

He added that providing monthly pass subsidies for Malaysians working in Singapore would require funding support from the Johor state government.

The cross-border rail service is currently slated to commence by December 2026.
