Australian man, 58, dies after being allegedly struck by Turkish man, 29, during dispute in Phuket, Thailand

The suspect apparently struck the victim once, who hit his head on the ground hard.

A 58-year-old Australian man died in Phuket, Thailand after he was allegedly struck by a 29-year-old Turkish man at Patong beach on Feb. 25.

The incident was caught on video.

Thailand police have since arrested the younger man in connection with the assault.

The deceased has been identified as Alan Roger Joliffe.

The victim had been attacked on Prachanukhro Road in tambon Patong of Kathu district at about 5pm on Wednesday, Bangkok Post reported.

What happened

The suspect, identified only as Tugay, was riding a motorcycle with Phuket licence plates.

He sounded his horn as he passed Joliffe.

The honking reportedly led to an argument.

The suspect then stopped, approached Joliffe, and struck him once on the face with his right hand.

The strike apparently caused Joliffe to collapse, lose consciousness, and hit his head on the ground.

Suspect fled

The suspect fled but was tracked down and arrested for questioning at around 4am on Thursday.

He has been charged with assault causing death and detained.

Police have opposed his bail.

Death reported to police

The death was reported to the police after Joliffe died.

He was pronounced dead at 10:23pm, following his admittance to Patong Hospital.

He was found to have sustained severe head injuries consistent with a violent assault.
