S'pore woman vomited 8 times, had diarrhoea 10 times, sent to hospital after eating food from Jurong biryani eatery
The woman sought emergency medical attention at Alexandra Hospital.
Update as of Jan. 30, 3pm: Mothership understands from J that there was a lack of settlement, as previously stated by the restaurant. The article has been edited to reflect this development.
A woman in Singapore recently fell sick after consuming food from Singapore Bucket Biryani, an Indian restaurant located in Jurong West.
As a result, she sought medical treatment at Alexandra Hospital's emergency department early in the morning on Jan. 24, 2026 after vomiting around eight times and having diarrhoea 10 times.
Speaking to Mothership, the woman who wanted to be known as J, said that prior to this, her fiancé placed a GrabFood order from the restaurant at around 10:10pm on Jan. 23.
The items ordered included:
- Mutton briyani with chicken tikka
- Garlic naan
- Cheese naan
- Paneer butter masala
- Gulab jamun
- Kulfi
- Sweet lassi
J noted that this was the only meal she consumed from an external food establishment that day.
Vomiting and diarrhoea
She told Mothership that a few hours after she consumed the food, she began feeling nauseous around 2am on Jan. 24, and was tossing and turning while trying to sleep.
"I was the only one who consumed the food," J said, adding that her fiancé only consumed the drink and subsequently got diarrhoea.
However, J's symptoms turned out to be much worse and included vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach pain and chills.
At around 3am, J began vomiting multiple times, adding that she could barely walk to the toilet as "the vomiting and diarrhoea came simultaneously".
In addition, her diarrhoea was so bad that she soiled her clothes a few times before reaching the toilet.
She initially did not want to wake her fiancé, as he had been working without much sleep recently for his research.
The symptoms turned out to be unbearable and she woke him up from deep sleep after the fifth round of vomiting and diarrhoea.
Sent to hospital
After J took some medication at home, the couple booked a Grab to Alexandra Hospital. By the time it arrived, she had already vomited for the eighth time and vomited once again in the car.
"When I reached Alexandra I could barely move as soon as I got of the car," she said, noting that her fiance had to put her in wheelchair.
"I was immediately brought inside and was given a bed," she said, adding that she was so severely dehydrated that medical staff could not find her veins to insert a drip.

J, who reached the hospital around 5:50am on Jan. 24, told Mothership that she left around 10:12am after treatment, where a doctor told her that her symptoms were consistent with food poisoning.
Restaurant's apology
Following this incident, J told Mothership that she was still feeling unwell as of Jan. 27.
Her fiancé left a GrabFood review about their experience, and the restaurant subsequently replied to apologise for the couple's negative experience.

"Your feedback about the food quality and the severe reaction you described is taken seriously,” the reply read.
The restaurant added:
“We understand how upsetting this must be, and we sincerely apologise for the distress caused. We are committed to maintaining high food quality standards and will review our preparation, cooking, and packaging processes to prevent any issues like this in the future.”
Internal review
In response to Mothership's queries, Singapore Bucket Biryani said the restaurant is aware of the incident.
"The customer has since spoken with us and informed us that the food was received in a chilled condition and that the delivery was later than usual," it said, adding that both parties have "resolved the issue amicably".
The restaurant also said that the incident occurred during the weekend where they received a high volume of orders.
"So far, we have not received any similar complaints from our delivery partners or customers," they said.
However, Mothership understands from J that there was a lack of settlement.
The restaurant added they have since "initiated the necessary arrangements with our internal team to thoroughly review the situation".
"This includes checking our food preparation processes, hygiene practices, and supplier handling to ensure that all standards are strictly complied with."
"To ensure our customers' safety, we are also conducting an internal investigation to better understand the circumstances surrounding this incident and will take appropriate corrective actions where necessary to prevent any recurrence," said the restaurant.
J has also reported the matter to SFA.
She claimed that an officer contacted her to inform her an inspection of Singapore Bucket Biryani's premises yielded "hygiene issues", and that enforcement action will be taken.
Responding to Mothership's queries, SFA said it had inspected the food establishment and will be taking enforcement actions for non-compliances found.
“The food operator was reminded to ensure their premises is kept clean and well-maintained and their food handlers adhere to good food safety practices,” SFA said.
SFA added: “Food safety is a joint responsibility. While SFA puts in place and enforces the regulatory measures, food operators must play their part by adhering to good food hygiene and preparation practices.”
SFA emphasised that the agency takes a serious view towards food safety and will investigate all feedback alleging poor food safety practices.
SFA said: “As part of the enquiry and gathering of evidence, SFA may engage the feedback provider for more details and will not hesitate to take enforcement action if sufficient evidence has been obtained.”
Members of the public who have concerns about food safety practices by food operators may should report to SFA via the online feedback form.
