S'pore Lexus SUV left JB petrol station without paying S$44.84 fuel bill purportedly due to 'miscommunication'
The man driving the car thought the woman, who was with him, had paid when she bought some items from the store.
A Singapore-registered Lexus SUV driven by a man, who was accompanied by a woman, allegedly left a Johor Bahru petrol station without paying the RM139.01 (S$44.84) fuel bill.
The incident occurred on Jan. 21 at a Caltex station located at the Skudai Highway rest area in Malaysia.
However, some light has been shed on why the alleged refuel-and-dash incident occurred.
Explanation
A person, purportedly a family member of the driver, explained the situation in a Facebook comment as a response to the Jan. 22 appeal calling on the couple to return to make payment.
The appeal had warned of a police report to be lodged within 48 hours if the couple did not return.
A commenter, claiming to be the couple's child, wrote that there was a "miscommunication between my mum and dad regarding the payment".
The station was contacted immediately in a bid to settle the bill.
The bill has since been paid.
The family member also apologised.
Another commenter, who claimed to personally know the driver, said the incident arose due to a "moment of carelessness".
What happened
It was previously reported that the woman had entered the petrol station store to make some purchases, while the car was refuelled with RON97 petrol.
She then paid for the items and returned to the car and the man drove off, as he had assumed she had taken care of the fuel bill as well.
The staff initially did not notice the car's departure and the lack of payment as the petrol station was busy.
