A patient in a hospital in Singapore asked a female nurse for help in the shower.

But when she followed him in, he stripped naked and asked her to help him with his "personal needs".

He was referring to a sex act.

Alarmed and outraged, the nurse, 26, immediately declined and wanted to leave the toilet.

But she felt bound by her duty and helped him with the shower before finally lodging a police report.

Charles Teng Wei Yian, 44, was sentenced to five weeks in jail on Jan. 30 for one count of insulting the modesty of the nurse with his words and gesture.

In hospital for liver inflammation

According to court documents seen by Mothership, Teng was admitted to a public hospital ward for treatment of liver inflammation from Sep. 10 to Sep. 23, 2024.

During his stay, he had a urine bag surgically inserted into his body and was told to ask the nurses for help should he need to use the toilet.

On Sep. 15, he pressed the call bell from his bed, and the victim responded to his call.

He told her in Chinese that he would like to take a shower, and she offered to get a male nurse to help him.

But he responded:  "You cannot follow me, is it?"

When the victim again offered to get a male nurse, Teng replied: "I have something to tell you".

As it was not out of the norm for some patients to raise medical issues with nurses that they omitted to tell the doctors, the victim carried Teng's urine bag and followed him into the toilet.

She closed the toilet door as there were other patients in the ward.

Asked her to help with 'personal needs'

Once the door was closed, Teng told the victim in a low voice: “As a man, I have my own personal needs, and I need you to help me.”

The victim understood his words to mean that he wanted her to perform a sex act on him. Teng later admitted that this was what he meant.

She immediately declined and drew the shower curtain between them while still holding on to the urine bag.

While she was looking for a suitable area to hold the urine bag while waiting for him to shower, he suddenly took off his clothes and moved out of the shower area.

He then exposed himself naked to her and asked her to scrub his back.

While the alarmed victim had wanted to leave the toilet, she felt duty-bound to assist him and agreed to scrub his back once he started his shower.

Asked to keep it a secret

The victim drew the shower curtain again and waited for Teng to start his shower.

But instead of showering, he asked her questions such as whether she was married, and if she could keep “this” a secret between themselves.

Growing more scared, the victim told him she would be bringing this up to her management. She felt unable to leave Teng behind due to her duty as a nurse.

She eventually helped him scrub his back despite being "very scared and uncomfortable", and helped him back to his bed after the shower.

She subsequently lodged a police report on Sep. 19, 2024.

"Nurses, in the course of their work, will have to help patients with toileting and showering. This case shows just how vulnerable nurses are to such forms of criminal conduct. There is, therefore strong public interest in deterring such acts against nurses," the prosecutor said.
