A prolonged cold spell in South Korea saw temperatures plunge to as low as −17°C on Jan. 30.
According to the country’s weather agency, morning temperatures today ranged from −17°C to −2°C, with daytime highs forecast to reach between −4°C and 6°C, colder than usual for this time of year, The Korea Herald reported.
Strong winds drove wind chills even lower.
Cold spell expected to ease
The cold spell has lasted for about 10 days, but is expected to gradually subside from next week.
According to The Korea Herald, which cited a forecast analysis officer from the Korea Meteorological Administration, the mass of cold air from the north that caused the prolonged chill is expected to shift eastward starting this weekend.
As a result, milder westerly winds are set to move into the Korean Peninsula, bringing more comfortable conditions and a return to seasonal temperatures.
In the coming days, average morning lows are expected to range from −10°C to 0°C, while daytime highs could climb to between 3°C and 9°C.
