Telegram WhatsappOn Jan. 7, Malaysian singer Mow Yee Hsian lost her battle against cancer, but not before fulfilling her wish to compete in and win a Chinese singing competition with her 8-year-old daughter last year.

Queen of Street Singing

Mow Yee Hsian, 46, was a popular Malaysian singer, affectionately known as “The Queen of Street Singing”, and as reported by World of Buzz, had previously won many singing competitions in Malaysia and abroad.

Sinchew reports that she and her husband, Xiao Jingsong, also a singer, gained further prominence during the Covid pandemic, when the couple would live-stream concerts.

The couple had married in 2014, and have a daughter together.

In 2019, she was diagnosed with colorectal cancer, which would eventually metastasise and spread throughout her body.

As the disease progressed, Mow decided that she would let her now 8-year-old daughter participate in a singing competition, the junior edition of the 好声Family (Family Singing Show).

Cherish for a lifetime

Oriental Daily reports that the decision was driven by Mow's determination to “leave behind memories that her daughter would cherish for a lifetime”.

Xiao revealed in an interview after Mow’s death that Mow would rehearse singing and dancing in between bouts of cancer treatments and radiotherapy.

Despite the strain this put on her body, she was determined to complete the performances and win the competition, although she would lament that the treatment was affecting her vocal cords.

Her persistence would be rewarded, as both she and her daughter eventually won the competition.

However, shortly after the end of the competition, her health would take a turn for the worse, eventually passing away on Jan. 7.

Amazing

Mow had described her performance with her daughter in competition as one of the most important things in her life, having achieved her musical dreams of being a “husband and wife team” and now able to add “mother and daughter team”.

Mow and Xiao had won a love song competition in 2010 before they married.

Mow’s daughter, who was present at her father’s interview, was quoted as whispering praise for her mother, saying that she was “amazing”.
