Chinese woman, 35, in Thailand robbed & bound by tape by man, 30, posing as house buyer
An arrest warrant against Gong Gaopeng has since been issued.
A 35-year-old Chinese woman in Pattaya, Thailand, was robbed of 31,000 baht (S$1,269) after meeting with another Chinese national who pretended to be a house buyer.
Real estate agent Yang Wang was then bound by tape and left inside a crashed car at a housing estate in the Nong Prue town, according to Thai media outlet Thaiger.
The Pattaya News reported that a police warrant has been issued for the arrest of Gong Gaopeng, 30.
Robbed at scissor-point after viewing
Yang had initially become acquainted with Gong, who had posed as a potential home buyer, on the WeChat platform.
He then arranged for a house viewing and requested she pick him up on Jan. 11, according to Thaiger.
When the viewing ended, he asked her to drive him back.
As Yang was driving, Gong then allegedly took out a pair of scissors and held them against Wang's waist, instructing her to continue driving.
He later purportedly bound her eyes, arms and torso with duct tape after forcing her to park elsewhere and move to the back seat.
Gong reportedly took Yang's Huawei smartphone and forced her to give him the password to her WeChat account.
Using the phone, he transferred around 31,000 baht (S$1,269) to his own account before trying to flee in her vehicle.
However, a passerby interrupted his escape and confronted him about parking restrictions.
Gong purportedly panicked and attempted to drive off, but Wang struggled inside the moving car, causing it to crash into a concrete wall.
Gong exited the car and fled on foot.
Yang later lodged a police report.
Arrest warrant issued against Chinese man
Pattaya authorities have since issued an arrest warrant against Gong, reported The Pattaya News.
He has also been charged with robbery involving violence or threats, use of a weapon at night, and unlawful detention and restraint.
Police investigations revealed that Gong had entered Thailand on Dec. 23, 2025, on a 60-day tourist visa.
He listed his address as Sathon district, Bangkok.
Police from Nong Prue and Chonburi are working on Gong's arrest, including reviewing CCTV footage to trace his escape route.
Yang, who has been legally employed in Thailand as a real estate agent since 2024, was reported to be in "a constant state of fear and shock".
She also sustained visible injuries from the incident.
