A Taiwanese basketball player was caught on video exchanging punches and taunts with his older brothers at a family gathering in Yilan County, Taiwan, late last year.

The family dispute arose after it was rumoured that the athlete had made untoward advances on his sister-in-law.

The brothers have since taken each other to court.

Denied, then apologised

According to ETtoday, around June 2024, the athlete, Oscar Kao, 27, was rumoured to have made inappropriate advances towards the wife of his older brother, Kao Guoqiang (transliteration).

Oscar Kao is the point guard for the Hsinchu Toplus Lioneers, a local basketball team.

He is the youngest of three siblings, while Guoqiang was the middle child. The eldest brother was Kao Shengwen (transliteration).

It was rumoured that Oscar would message Guoqiang's wife to ask her out, TVBS wrote.

While initially denying the rumours, he would later say that he did engage in "immature acts" and apologised, ETtoday reported.

However, that did not prevent a falling out.

'I'll break your legs'

On Dec. 3, 2024, things got physical among the three siblings at a family gathering at a restaurant in Yilan County, according to ETtoday, citing police reports.

Video of the fight circulated among the public.

The fight reportedly started from inside the restaurant, where the two older brothers were seen shoving their youngest brother.

A woman could be heard shouting, "What did your wife do!" ETtoday wrote.

The fight later spilt onto the streets, where several people could be seen in a tussle.

Things escalated after a punch was thrown, presumably by one of Oscar's brothers.

At one point in the video, Shengwen could be seen grabbing the basketballer and pinning him on the ground, before saying,"I'm going to break your legs and make sure you can never play ball again," ETtoday reported.

Oscar was also seen challenging and taunting his brothers.

Attempts by their father and other relatives to break up the fight proved futile.

Tensions only simmered after police arrived at the scene, TVBS wrote.

The brothers have taken each other to court over the fight and pleaded guilty to the various charges against them.

A verdict on the case will be delivered soon.

Apologised to fans

According to TVBS, the affair and family fight were just the latest in a series of scandals that the athlete has been embroiled in.

His team announced that he will voluntarily step back from team activities.

Oscar responded to the latest media reports about his family dispute in an Instagram story on Dec. 2

In it, he wrote that he was not the one who started the fight and will leave it to the courts to decide.

He offered an apology to his fans, saying, "As a professional athlete, I shouldn't have lost control of my emotions and become a bad role model. I deeply regret my actions."

He also said that he would accept any punishment meted out by the team or the basketball league.
