WhatsappA new Singapore embassy will be established in Mexico City in 2026, the first in the Spanish-speaking world.

President Tharman Shanmugaratnam made the announcement on Dec. 1 in Mexico City.

He is currently on his first state visit to Mexico as president from Nov. 30 to Dec. 3.

State visit

President Tharman met and was hosted to lunch by Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo on Dec. 1 at the National Palace, as both countries commemorated the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties.

Both leaders made key commitments, including Sheinbaum for Mexico to ratify the Pacific Alliance (PA)-Singapore Free-Trade Agreement (PASFTA), which would enhance trade ties and productive investment for both countries.

Singapore is set to become the first associated state of the PA after the PASFTA is ratified by all four PA member states: Chile, Colombia, Mexico, and Peru.

Other areas of mutual interest were also noted in discussions, including technology, innovation, fintech, environmental protection and food security.

Two memoranda of understanding were also signed on coral reef restoration and on international development cooperation.

As part of deepening relations between both countries, Mexico will be the second Latin American country to host a Singapore embassy in 2026, after the embassy in Brazil, which opened in 2012.

Mexico currently has a resident embassy in Singapore, established in June 1990.
