Hong Kong woman, who died in Wang Fuk Court fire, knocked on doors & saved 4 people & 1 dog
Not all heroes wear capes.
A woman in Hong Kong is being remembered as a hero for helping to save the lives of four of her neighbours and one pet dog, during the tragic Wang Fuk Court fire that has left 146 dead so far.
Upon receiving an evacuation notice, she reportedly knocked on other residents' doors, alerting them to the fire.
She later perished in the flames.
An unsung hero
According to neighbours' accounts, the woman did not evacuate the building immediately upon receiving the alert, but instead knocked on every one of her neighbours' doors on the 17th floor where she lived.
Her actions caused her to lose her only opportunity to escape and she retreated back into her home, where she eventually died.
Her heroic actions were brought to light by her husband, who revealed on a Tai Po residents' Facebook group that her body was later found in her home.
"She gave her own life to save the lives of four people and a dog," he said. "The principles she upheld throughout her life remained unchanged until her last moment."
Grieving husband
The woman's husband also expressed his profound regret over her death.
"She has been with me for over 40 years and has shared my joys and sorrows, but I couldn't be there for her when she needed me the most," he lamented in the post.
"I blamed myself for having her face such a horrible moment alone. If I could have called her a minute earlier and asked her to leave, it might have been a better outcome."
He added that he believed that his wife would not have regretted her decision to help others.
Online commenters chimed in and expressed their admiration for her actions.
"She bravely saved people at the final moment of life and death. Although she has left your side, we should be proud of her," one wrote.
"Whether in life or death, you have demonstrated the glory of humanity," another wrote.
