Najib sentenced to another 15 years in prison, fined S$3.6 billion for abuse of power
Bossku in jail.
Najib Razak, the former Prime Minister of Malaysia, has been handed his sentence after being found guilty in the 1MDB case, convicted on 25 charges of money laundering and abuse of power.
High Court judge Collin Lawrence Sequerah sentenced Najib to 15 years' imprisonment for each abuse of power charge, and five years' imprisonment for each money laundering charge, Malaysiakini reported.
The judge ordered the sentences to run concurrently, so Najib will have to serve 15 years after the conclusion of his current six-year prison term for a separate case.
Additional fines, more prison time if he doesn't pay up
In addition, Sequerah ordered Najib to pay a fine of RM11.38 billion (S$3.61 billion), the minimum sum of five times the "gratification amount" for each of his abuse of power charges.
If Najib cannot pay this fine, he must serve an additional 10 years for each abuse of power charge, which might likely run concurrently.
Najib must also pay another fine of RM2.08 billion (S$660 million) under Section 55(2) of the Anti-Money Laundering and Anti-Terrorism Financing Act in total for his money laundering charges.
If he fails to pay this amount, he must serve another 30 months in jail, or two-and-a-half years.
Najib's current prison term ends in August 2028.
