2 suspects aged 20 & 17 arrested for allegedly stealing $1,625 from elderly man on Christmas Eve

The police recovered the money within four hours.

A duo aged 20 and 17 allegedly snatched and ran away with a plastic bag containing S$1,625 in cash from an elderly victim in his 70s, on Christmas Eve.

They were arrested for their suspected involvement in the snatch theft within four hours of the filing of the police report on Dec. 24.

Detailed in a news release, the police stated that they were alerted to the incident along Redhill Close on Dec. 24, 2025 at about 2:50pm.

Stolen cash recovered

Through follow-up investigations and the aid of police cameras, officers from Clementi Police Division and Police Operations Command Centre established the identity of the 20-year-old.

The police arrested him and his suspected accomplice, a male teenager, recovering the stolen cash.

The duo will be charged in court on Dec. 26, 2025 with the offence of snatch theft under Section 356 of the Penal Code 1871.

If found guilty, the offence carries an imprisonment term of one to seven years, and caning.

The police stated that it will not tolerate "such brazen acts of crime and will spare no effort to apprehend such offenders and deal with them in accordance with the law".

The news release also urged members of the public who encountered such cases to remain calm and take note of the "physical appearance and distinctive features of the perpetrator" and to dial 999 for the police as soon as possible.
