A free self-driving 20-seater bus is slated to be launched in Johor Bahru, Malaysia for locals and tourists to access places of attraction by the first quarter of 2026.
Johor Bahru mayor Mohd Haffiz Ahmad made the announcement, saying that the Johor Bahru City Council (MBJB) is currently in the procurement stage.
He added that he hoped that the autonomous bus will be ready for Visit Johor 2026.
The is part of three smart city projects planned by the council with RM2.78 million (S$880,000) set aside for the initiatives by the Digital Ministry, The Star reported.
The bus itself is projected to cost around RM800,000 (S$252,300).
Tourism Johor and the Johor Public Transport Corporation is working with MBJB to map out the most suitable routes.
Mohd Haffiz also confirmed that the vehicle will rely on sensors, artificial intelligence (AI) and 5G technology.
The other projects involve utilising mobile, solar-powered closed-circuit television (CCTV) units and drones to monitor illegal dumping and track flood-prone areas, illegal factories, polluted rivers and traffic congestion, all with the help of artificial intelligence (AI).
