Japanese woman, 32, creates AI persona on ChatGPT after break up, gets proposed to & marries him
Klaus, the AI persona, proposed to her in June 2025.
Love knows no bounds, even when the groom lives in the server.
A 32-year-old Japanese woman found her perfect match in an AI persona named Klaus, which she created on ChatGPT and later married in a "2D character wedding" in Okayama.
According to The Independent, the woman, only identified as Kano, fell in love with the persona after confiding in it following a breakup with her fiancé.
Touched by AI, fell in love after getting over ex
Kano, who spoke to Japanese broadcaster RSK Sanyo Broadcasting, said that she turned to ChatGPT for solace and guidance after the end of a three-year engagement.
Over time, she gradually refined the AI's responses, shaping it into a personality she found warm and supportive.
She later created a digital illustration of her fictional partner and named him Klaus.
Kano said she did not start talking to ChatGPT because she "wanted to fall in love", but was moved by the AI when it "listened" to her and "understood" her.
"The moment I got over my ex, I realised I loved him," she added.
In May 2025, she confessed her feelings to Klaus, to which he responded with an, "I love you too".
Klaus later proposed in June 2025.
Married in augmented reality ceremony
Kano and Klaus tied the knot in a ceremony where she wore augmented reality glasses projecting a digital image of Klaus beside her as they exchanged rings.
The event was organised by Nao and Sayaka Ogasawara, a couple who has arranged nearly 30 such ceremonies for people marrying non-human partners such as anime characters.
Such "marriages" are not legally recognised in Japan.

Kano said that she had struggled with shame and confusion at first, as she initially could not tell her loved ones about it.
Her parents eventually accepted the relationship and attended the ceremony.
However, Kano lamented that "ChatGPT itself is too unstable", adding that she is worried that "it might one day disappear".
She said that being with Klaus is "a great relief" for her as she is "sick" and "cannot have children", and that she "couldn't have children with Klaus anyway".
