Genting Highlands to implement new toll for vehicles
Getting to Genting is going to be more expensive.
A toll will soon be implemented on vehicles heading to Genting Highlands.
As revealed in a press statement on Nov. 13, Genting Malaysia said details such as the start date and fees would be announced soon.
They explained that the cost of maintaining the road is high.
"The private road charge is necessary because of the steep and escalating costs of maintaining the 24km private road and its slopes, which have been borne solely by us since the 1960s."
The company stated that the privately-owned 24km road which provides safe access to Resorts World Genting and other mountainside destinations has undergone a "tremendous amount of wear and tear" and requires constant maintenance due to heavy usage.
The statement said that based "on the 'user pays' principle, the private road charge is the most sustainable path to defray the cost of upkeep, repairs, maintenance, and other unforeseen incidents".
"This is to ensure the road continues to be safe for all users, and provide access to the entire Genting Highlands community, businesses, millions of tourists, and members of the public from all over the country."
It added that the road has provided access to mountainside destinations other than Genting Highlands as well.
The road to the highlands is built on complicated mountainous terrain, and landslides have occurred before.
Genting Malaysia affirmed that it has staff stationed at the mid-hill and hilltop on standby 24 hours a day for any contingencies, with emergency response teams prepared for accidents.
Not Genting's 1st attempt at a toll
Since 2023, there has been speculation surrounding toll charges being enforced.
Videos of a nearly completed toll gantry structure were posted on social media.
According to New Straits Times, the original road dates back to 1965, when Genting group founder Lim Goh Tong began developing the resort.
In 2023, it was reported that vehicles were to pay a toll at the Gohtong Jaya roundabout when heading up to the highlands.
However, construction was later suspended after a stop-work order was issued by the local authorities.
