A 36-year-old man in China died on Oct. 5 following a gastric bypass surgery which he underwent to lose weight.

According to South China Morning Post (SCMP), he had weighed more than 130kg and wanted to shed some kilos to make a better impression on his girlfriend's parents.

Wanted to lose weight before marriage

The man, who hailed from Xinxiang city in the Henan province, had reportedly struggled for a long time with his weight and eating habits.

He had a new relationship which was "going well", and the couple was preparing to meet each other's families prior to getting married.

The man wanted to slim down and chose to undergo gastric bypass surgery, in hopes of presenting a healthier image to his girlfriend's parents, reported SCMP.

On Sep. 30, he was admitted the Ninth People's Hospital in Zhengzhou.

The surgery was completed successfully on Oct. 2, and he was initially moved to the intensive care unit (ICU) before being moved to another ward.

Condition abruptly deteriorated, died from respiratory failure

The man's condition suddenly worsened on Oct. 4.

He stopped breathing at around 6:40am and was rushed back to the ICU for emergency treatment.

He subsequently died from respiratory failure on Oct. 5.

According to SCMP, the man was previously diagnosed with metabolic syndrome, along with hypertension and fatty liver.

His family questioned whether the hospital had adequately assessed his physical condition before the surgery, and raised concerns about the handling of post-operative complications and the timeliness of his emergency care.

However, the hospital shared that the man had met the clinical conditions required for the surgery.

On Oct. 10, his family allowed for an autopsy to be conducted to confirm the cause of death.

The hospital said that it would take full responsibility in accordance with the findings and relevant laws.
