The body of a 34-year-old man was retrieved from the waters near Merlion Park on Oct. 30.

In response to Mothership's queries, the Singapore Police Force said they received a call for assistance for a case of suspected drowning at the Singapore River.

The body of the man was subsequently found and retrieved from the waters.

He was pronounced dead at the scene by a Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) paramedic.

Preliminary investigations do not suggest foul play.

15 minutes in the water

A Mothership reader provided a video of a man floating in the waters under the Esplanade Bridge.

An orange life buoy was seen floating close to the man on the surface of the water, but he apparently continued to stay buoyant while facing the bridge pier.

According to the eyewitness, the video was taken around 10:40pm.

The man was allegedly floating in the water for 15 minutes before the police and SCDF arrived at the scene.

However, the man was no longer seen near the surface subsequently.

The eyewitness added that the man apparently held onto an object, which looked like a book, when he was seen jumping off the Esplanade Bridge.

Passers-by apparently shouted at him when he did so.

Police investigations are ongoing.
