Chong Pang Gateway to be demolished to make way for new integrated development, will be rebuilt in 2027
New Chong Pang City.
Chong Pang Gateway in Yishun is expected to be rebuilt in 2027, said Minister for Home Affairs and Yishun MP, K Shanmugam on Sep. 24.
In a Facebook post, he said it will be demolished for the upcoming integrated development, Chong Pang City.
Redevelopment works
The Chong Pang Gateway, a familiar landmark for residents in Yishun, is located at 126 Yishun Street 11.
"This is one of the two gateways in Chong Pang. Our merchants and grassroots leaders helped with paying for it to be built, in 1992," he wrote.
Once construction of Chong Pang City is completed in 2027, the gateway will be rebuilt.
Gateways originally built to boost businesses in the area
According to National Heritage Board (NHB), "entrepreneurial shopkeepers" pooled resources along with the town council to construct the two Chinese-style gateways in 1992.
The construction was carried out after business at Chong Pang City declined by at least 20 per cent after Northpoint opened, and shop owners decided to "spruce up" the area.
The works included the installation of metal awnings and the construction of concrete pavements.
Business within the neighbourhood centre later improved by almost 30 per cent.
