Malaysian Member of Parliament (MP) Hassan Karim questioned if it was appropriate to invite Trump to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) summit in Malaysia during parliament on Aug. 19.

The Star reported that Hassan had asked if Malaysia would "roll out the red carpet for a United States president whose hands are stained with the blood of innocent Gazans in this genocidal war."

Hassan is a member of PKR, Anwar's own party.

The summit will be a rare platform to deliver Asean's position on the ongoing conflict in Gaza: Tok Mat

In response to Hassan's questions. Malaysian Foreign Minister Mohamad "Tok Mat" Hasan said that the summit should be seen as a platform for Asean to clearly state their stance on the conflict in Gaza to Trump, Malay Mail reported.

"We should not mix issues. In this setting, I believe Asean will be able to voice its stance clearly. We have already managed to secure a joint statement from Asean expressing deep regret over the atrocities committed against the Palestinian people," said Hasan.

He further added that Malaysia are planning to use the opening chairman's statement during the summit to lay out Asean's concern over the Gaza conflict to Trump.

They will also take the opportunity to urge the U.S. to act responsibly in helping to solve the situation in Gaza.

"We are confident that the U.S., and President Trump in particular, would want to see the atrocities committed by Israel brought to an end," Hasan affirmed.

Trump and Xi to attend Asean summit

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim previously announced last month that Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping will be attending the 47th Asean Summit in October.

The summit is scheduled to take place in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
