Trump & Xi expected to attend Asean Summit in October: Anwar
"We must ensure that their visit yields results of lasting value."
Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim announced that four prominent world leaders are expected to attend the 47th Asean Summit in October, two of whom are United States President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping.
The summit is scheduled to take place in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
World leaders expected to attend the summit
In a speech during the 58th Asean Day celebration on Aug. 8, Anwar stated that the heads of government of Asean and dialogue partners would be in attendance at the 47th Asean Summit, as well as Trump and Xi, The Star reported.
He further added that they have "received positive indications on the attendance from Brazil's President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa".
"We must ensure that their visit yields results of lasting value"
According to The Star, Anwar said that while securing the presence of the four leaders is significant, he stressed the need for tangible, long-lasting outcomes.
He added that the attendance of such high-profile figures would garner the world's attention, and that they must hence rise to the occasion.
"The greater test is to ensure that they leave Malaysia and Asean feeling their time was well spent... The eyes of the world will be upon us, and we must therefore rise to the occasion."
Pivotal moment for Malaysia
Anwar stated that the summit is a pivotal moment for Malaysia as it nears the culmination of Malaysia's term as the Asean chair, and emphasised that the actions taken in the coming month will determine how its performance is evaluated, New Straits Times (NST) reported.
He also stressed the importance of strengthening Asean's foundation to ensure that it remains resilient and relevant, particularly by deepening economic ties via intra-Asean trade and investments.
"One of the key issues to be deliberated in October would be the economic, intra-Asean trade, cross border investments, energy grid and connectivity", he added.
