IKEA Singapore is allowed to display the Swedish flag at two of its stores in Singapore, the furniture chain clarified.

This comes after online discussions raised concerns about why the Swedish retail brand is allowed to display a foreign country's flag in Singapore, amid concerns that publicly displaying any foreign flag is an offence.

Approved permit from MHA

In response to queries from Mothership, an IKEA spokesperson said that the brand has an approved permit for its stores in Alexandra and Tampines:

"IKEA Singapore has an approved permit from the Ministry of Home Affairs to display the Swedish flag at both our Alexandra and Tampines stores, alongside the Singapore flag."

Could be illegal otherwise

Publicly displaying any foreign flag or national emblem is an offence, according to the Foreign National Emblems (Control of Display) Act 1949.

If convicted of the offence, the individual may be liable to a fine of up to S$500, a jail term of up to six months, or both.

In the case of a body corporate, however, they can be given a fine not exceeding S$1,000.
