Gojek rider in Jakarta dies after being run over by Indonesia police armoured vehicle
Seven police staff in the vehicle have been secured.
A video of an Indonesian police armoured vehicle running over a Gojek rider at a protest has caused an uproar on social media.
The incident occurred on Aug. 28 when police were dispersing protesters, according to Tempo.
In the video, the Gojek rider dressed in a green uniform could be seen attempting to get off the ground before being run over by the police armoured vehicle.
The vehicle then came to a brief halt before moving off again.
Some protestors were seen angrily chasing the vehicle while others carried the rider onto another motorcycle to bring him to safety.
The 21-year-old rider has passed away, BBC Indonesia reported.
His family described him as the backbone of the family and a hard worker.
At a press conference held later that night, the head of Jakarta Metropolitan Police apologised for the incident and expressed his condolences to the family.
He promised to take action against the staff involved in the incident.
The chief of the Professional and Security Division of the Indonesian National Police added that seven personnel have been secured, according to Kompas.
He added that investigations are ongoing.
"We're still investigating their roles in this incident and who was driving the vehicle. What's clear is all seven of them were in the vehicle."
GoTo, the parent company of Gojek, said that the company will provide compensation for the family and cover the funeral arrangement costs.
There have been protests in Indonesia since Aug. 26 following public outrage on a range of issues, including changes made to parliamentary pay and benefits.
Organisers have promised they will be joined by protesters in major Indonesian industrial hubs, including Bandung, Pontianak, and Batam.
