Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be visiting China this weekend for the first time in over seven years.

The visit comes days after U.S. President Donald Trump imposed 50 per cent tariffs on goods from India for purchasing Russian oil and military equipment.

The economic pressure has ignited simmering tension between the two countries and redirected India to explore other markets to diversify its trade.

It also sees India and China slowly rebuilding ties.

Modi's visit to China is at the invitation of Chinese President Xi Jinping.

It will be his first visit to China since June 2018.

Travelling to China from Aug. 31 to Sep. 1

Modi will be travelling to China from Aug. 31 to Sep. 1, 2025, to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Tianjin, according to a press release by India's Ministry of External Affairs.

On the sidelines of the Summit, Modi is expected to hold bilateral meetings with several leaders attending the Summit.

The SCO is a Eurasian political and security grouping which includes Russia.

Before visiting China, Modi will be visiting Japan from Aug. 29 to 30 to participate in the 15th India-Japan Annual Summit.

It will be Modi's first Summit with Japanese Prime Minister Ishiba.
