A hairless dog inked with an intricate back tattoo at the Pet Fair Asia in Shanghai has sparked public outrage.

Photos and videos of the Mexican hairless dog quickly went viral.

An elaborate dragon tattoo covered most of the canine's body. It was also wearing a gold chain around its neck and a gold watch on one of its paws.

No anaesthetic used

The owner claimed that no anaesthetic was used while the dog was being tattooed.

One of the videos uploaded online shows the owner lifting the dog by pinching its neck while saying: "See? It does not hurt at all. It feels nothing."

The man has reportedly been banned from entering the venue by the event organisers, South China Morning Post (SCMP) reported.

Dog inked last year

The tattoo artist who tattooed the canine, Lv, told Phoenix Publishing and Media Group that he inked the dog in June last year.

He had initially turned down the request, but the owner insisted and claimed that the Mexican hairless breed has less sensitivity to pain.

According to Lv, the owner also said that the dog was like his child, and he would look cooler with a tattoo.

Following the owner's persistent request, Lv eventually agreed to apply the tattoo at a pet hospital.

The tattoo artist said that he used disposable tools, which were thrown immediately.

He claimed that the canine was given a liquid anaesthetic injection before the session.

The owner reportedly comforted the dog throughout the procedure, and a veterinarian managed the disinfection process and provided guidance.

Lv said he did not consider his action to be animal abuse at the time, though he was worried about the dog's recovery.

Act condemned

Many online users have stepped up to condemn the act, calling it animal abuse.

Some online users said that the dog owner should be deprived of the canine's custody.

Many online users also call for the dog owner and the tattoo artist to be punished.
