Hotel Miramar, located along Havelock Road and overlooking Robertson Quay, will cease operations at the end of October and its 108 employees will be laid off.

The 342-room hotel was first opened in 1971.

Closure due to business outlook

In a joint statement with the Food, Drinks and Allied Workers Union (FDAWU), the hotel shared that the decision was made after careful and comprehensive evaluation of the hotel's long-term business outlook.

Hotel Miramar is unionised and both have a good longstanding labour-management relationship since 1973.

The hotel engaged the union early and demonstrated "exceptional responsibility and commitment to supporting affected employees and ensuring they are treated with fairness, dignity, and respect," the joint statement wrote.

Retrenchment packages in line with collective agreement and union norms will be provided, and will also be extended to employees under the re-employment scheme.

Additional payouts will be provided to recognise long-serving staff, the statement wrote.

Employees with less than two years of service will be provided with ex-gratia payment.

Long-serving staff 'backbone' of hotel

"We are especially thankful for our long-serving colleagues, many of whom have devoted decades of their lives to the hotel, with some serving for as long as 55 years," Hotel Miramar’s Managing Director Ken Lim said.

Lim said that these long-serving staff are the "backbone" of the hotel, and their service and loyalty are deeply appreciated.

FDAWU said that it is working closely with the hotel to provide support to affected staff in finding new employment.

The union's general secretary Sankaradass S Chami expressed sadness at the hotel's closure, describing it as "one our nation's hospitality icons that has provided good jobs" for Singaporeans.

"We are thankful that even at this hour, the management has gone above and beyond it collective agreement to support impacted employees, working closely with FDAWU to ensure that workers' welfare is of utmost priority," Sankaradass added.

In 1976, it hosted opposition Member of Parliament J.B. Jeyeratnam's public forum on free speech.

The hotel was refurbished in 1992.

It was reported earlier in July 2025 that a deal to sell the hotel for around S$200 million to Japanese investors was close to completion.
