Chinese woman reunites with biological mother after 30 years, spotted her on Douyin

A woman in Wenzhou's Ouhai District, Zhejiang, China reunited with her biological mother after 30 years of separation when the daughter spotted someone who looked exactly like her on social media and did a DNA test.

Dimsum Daily reported that the daughter Yan, 32, spotted a video of someone who looked very similar to her on Douyin, the Chinese domestic version of TikTok.

DNA test

Yan then contacted the police and did a DNA test. The results confirmed that the woman she spotted on Douyin, Xu, was indeed her biological mother.

According to the Wenzhou Evening News, Yan was adopted as a child and while she was happy with her adopted parents, she always wanted to find her birth parents.

On Jun. 3, Yan went to Zezhu Police Station after spotting Xu on Douyin and suspecting they were mother and daughter due to their uncanny resemblance.

After the police collected Yan's DNA and worked with authorities in Jiangxi, the DNA results showed that Xu was Yan's biological mother.

Years of searching

Xu said she had to place Yan with another family 30 years ago due to financial hardship and the two families lost contact.

United Daily News reported that while Xu lived in deep regret, the whole family never gave up searching for Yan even after multiple DNA comparison setbacks.

In June 2022, Xu posted missing-person posts and messages on Douyin.

Yan who is married with children and has expressed gratitude to her adoptive parents who always treated her as their own.

She had quietly investigated her origins in the past but was hesitant to pursue it further as she was afraid of upsetting her adoptive parents. This reunion with her biological mother brought her long-awaited closure.

Yan added that her adoptive parents were fully supportive of her efforts to find her birth family and were genuinely happy that she successfully reconnected with her roots.

The pair finally reunited and according to Dimsum Daily, Xu and her family travelled overnight from Jiangxi to Wenzhou where she and Yan embraced in tears.
