It appeared to be from a burst pipe.
One resident said the water reached as high as the treetops, CNA reported.
Mothership has reached out to PUB to confirm if it was in any way related to the sinkhole appearing the next day.
The sinkhole
The sinkhole opened up at the junction of Tanjong Katong Road and Mountbatten Road on Jul. 26, adjacent to a PUB worksite.
Dashcam footage shared by a car showed the hair-raising moment when the sinkhole opened up and a car fell in.
The female driver was later rescued by migrant workers and conveyed to hospital.
PUB has since called for a safety time-out to review similar sewer construction works across the island.
It is working with the Building and Construction Authority and the Land Transport Authority to oversee repair efforts and investigate the cause of the incident.
The fallen car has since been retrieved, and the sinkhole filled with liquefied soil to stabilise the area, PUB said.
No definitive timeline for road reopening has been provided yet.
