US swim team hit with stomach bug at S'pore world championships
A team official said no one has withdrawn from the competition.
The U.S. swimming team was hit with an outbreak of acute gastroenteritis ahead of the world championships in Singapore, leading to two competitors skipping their opening races on Jul. 27.
Olympic champion Torri Huske and 18-year-old Claire Weinstein did not participate in the women's 100m butterfly and 400m freestyle, respectively, “so they could focus on other events”, team official Nikki Warner told AFP.
She clarified that no one has withdrawn from the competition.
Huske, along with teammates Kate Douglass, Simone Manuel, and Erin Gemmell, clinched a silver medal in the 4x100m freestyle relay later that afternoon.
The stomach bug is suspected to have originated during their training camp in Phuket, Thailand, according to media reports.
It is unclear how many U.S. athletes were affected by the stomach bug, although swimming news site SwimSwam reported that "almost half" of the roster was affected a week prior.
Nine-time Olympic gold medallist Katie Ledecky did not appear to be one of them, finishing fastest in the 400m freestyle final with a time of 4:01.04.
The World Aquatics Championships run til Aug. 3.
