5 dead, including gunman who apparently took his own life, in New York building shooting

A gunman reportedly entered a high-rise midtown Manhattan building in New York on Jul. 28 at about 6:30pm (U.S. time) and opened fire, killing a police officer and three civilians — two men and one woman.

He later reportedly took his own life.

Another person was injured after getting shot.

Six people in total were shot at 345 Park Avenue, U.S. media reported.

Suspect identified

The suspect has been identified as Shane D Tamura, 27.

He had a Las Vegas, Nevada address.

Travelled across country

Tamura reportedly travelled across the country to get to New York.

He went through Colorado on Jul. 26, Nebraska and Iowa on Jul. 27 then Columbia, New Jersey as recently as Jul. 28 afternoon (all dates are U.S. time).

The vehicle entered New York shortly after.

According to officials in Las Vegas, the shooting suspect has a "documented mental health history".

His motive was unclear, and it was not known why he chose the building in particular.

The building where the shooting took place was a commercial office building with many tenants, including the NFL and accounting firm KPMG.

Opened fire at lobby

The suspect was seen parking his BMW outside and openly carrying an M4 rifle into the building.

He reportedly entered the building's lobby and "immediately" opened fire on an New York Police Department (NYPD) officer.

He then shot at a woman, who took cover behind a pillar.

He then started "spraying" the lobby with gunfire, it was reported.

Another man in the lobby was also shot.

He then called an elevator, and when it came down to the lobby, he stood aside allowing a woman who was in the lift to "walk past unharmed", according to New York police.

Took own life

He then exited on the 33rd floor, where Rudin Management, the offices of the building's owner, are located,

He fired his weapon as he walked down the hallway.

He then took his own life there, where his body was later found by officers.

The perpetrator of the shooting has died of an "apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound", New York City mayor Eric Adams confirmed.

Police officer identified

The police officer who was killed has been identified as Didarul Islam, 36.

He was an immigrant from Bangladesh who has been with the NYPD for three-and-a-half years.

He was married and had two children.

His wife is pregnant with their third child.
