A 55-year-old man is scheduled to be charged in court on Jul. 30 for driving an over-height lorry with a crane attachment that damaged the Central Expressway (CTE) tunnel ceiling in November 2024.

His offences are driving a heavy motor vehicle that collided with a building or structure and for driving a heavy motor vehicle exceeding 4.5m in height without police escort, the Singapore Police Force (SPF) said in a Jul. 29 news release.

Damaged ceiling

On Nov. 8, the police were alerted to a traffic accident at around 12:05pm that involved an over-height lorry with a crane attachment.

SPF investigations revealed the driver was driving the lorry with a raised crane boom when it collided with the height limit barrier and the tunnel ceiling as it was entering the slip road along Cairnhill Road into the CTE tunnel.

The collision caused extensive damage to the height limit barrier and the mechanical and electrical units of the tunnel.

The total damages amount to about S$1.4 million.

The driver was arrested the same day.

It was his second time committing both offences.

If found guilty of driving a heavy motor vehicle that collides with any building or structure, the driver could face a jail term of up to two years, a fine of up to S$5,000, or both.

For driving a heavy vehicle with an overall height exceeding 4.5m without a police escort, the driver could face a mandatory jail term of one to three years and a fine of up to S$2,000.
