M'sia man & woman, both aged 19, charged for murder of student, 20, in Cyberjaya, KL
They could be sentenced to death.
A couple in Malaysia, both aged 19, were charged in court on Jul. 10 for allegedly conspiring and murdering a 20-year-old student in a condominium in Cyberjaya, Kuala Lumpur.
The victim, Maniishapriet Kaur Akhara, was found dead in the unit.
She was found with injuries to her head.
She was living with five other students who had returned home for the holidays on Jun. 21.
The victim was alone at the unit as she was scheduled to sit for an examination.
Nodded in court
The accused, M. Sri Darvien and his girlfriend D. Thineswary, both nodded in court to indicate they understood the charges read out to them, according to Sinar Harian.
No plea was recorded from either of them.
Could be sentenced to death
The male accused, Sri Darvien, was charged with the murder of Maniishapriet at the condominium unit along Persiaran Multimedia between 9:11pm and 11:31pm on Jun. 23.
He could be sentenced to death or jailed up to 30 to 40 years, and given a minimum of 12 strokes of the cane, if found guilty.
The female accused, Thineswary, was charged with abetting Sri Darvien in committing the murder at the same location at 12:30pm on the same day.
She faces the same punishment.
Two suspects released
Four suspects were initially arrested in total.
Malaysia police later clarified that only the couple were charged, while the other two suspects were released.
No bail was granted.
The case will be mentioned again on Sep. 11.
