M'sian man, 43, dies of suspected heart attack after son, 16, dies in motorcycle accident earlier that day
Both Lai and his son were laid to rest on the same day.
A 43-year-old Malaysian man, Lai Zhi Qi, died of a suspected heart attack after hearing that his 16-year-old son died in an accident earlier the same day.
According to China Press, both incidents took place on Jul. 6.
Lai worked as a contractor, while his son was a student at Port Dickson High School.
The two were cremated at Fairy Park Memorial Park in Seremban, Malaysia, on Jul. 8, following a two-day wake held at their home in Port Dickson, Malaysia,
Lai's son lost control of his motorcycle
According to China Press, Lai's son needed to refuel his motorcycle and had ridden it to a petrol station less than two kilometres from his house, near the Port Dickson beachfront.
However, he suddenly lost control of his motorcycle in front of the petrol station and the motorcycle flipped over.
He died on the spot.
Lai collapsed after seeing son
Lai's family said that upon hearing the news, Lai rushed down to the accident site to check on his son.
Upon arriving, he learnt that his son had suffered severe head injuries and died on the scene.
After returning home to tell the rest of the family the bad news, Lai suddenly felt unwell and collapsed.
Lai's wife, 44-year-old Leah Amour E. Basaca, told China Press that after Lai told the family what had happened, his face turned pale and he fainted.
She said that she had prior training in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and attempted to perform CPR on Lai as the rest of the family called Malaysia Emergency Response Services (MERS) at 999.
The ambulance arrived half an hour later.
Paramedics continued to perform CPR on Lai en route to Port Dickson hospital, but Lai was pronounced dead on arrival.
Both Lai and his son were laid to rest on the same day.
According to China Press, friends and family gathered to pay their last respects to the father and son at the wake on Jul. 8.
Lai's parents were also present at the wake and were visibly ridden with grief.
Leah was also overcome with emotion and was sobbing uncontrollably.
Her other two daughters, an 8-year-old and 11-year-old, were also at the wake. The two were crying as they thanked guests for attending.
Lai's son's friends who were present paid tribute to him by singing a song.
Lai leaves behind wife and two children
Lai's father, 71-year-old Lai Ren Song, told China Press that his son had always been in good health, despite having high blood pressure.
He said that when Lai married Leah, who is Filipino, Lai had applied for a legal marriage licence and also helped Leah apply for a Malaysian citizenship.
However, there has been no follow-up regarding her citizenship status since then.
Lai's father said that when Lai was younger, he used to work as a motorcycle mechanic and worked odd jobs, and had little savings.
He added that his granddaughters are legal Malaysia citizens and are currently attending SJK(C) St. Leonards, an elementary school in Port Dickson.
Lai's father said that Lai was the sole breadwinner of the family and now that he has passed on, his wife and two children are left alone with no one to support them.
He added that he hopes that government officials can step in and help Leah obtain her Malaysian citizenship as soon as possible in order for her to support the household and raise her children legally.
