When his girlfriend received a phone call, a 30-year-old man in Singapore suspected it was from a male intern at her workplace and got angry.

He then punched the woman and tied her to his bed using cable ties.

The man then poured flammable liquid on her while laughing and ignited a gas lighter near her, causing her burn wounds.

About four months later, he abused her yet again, including hitting her with a mop handle, stripping her naked, tying her up and slashing her with a saw.

The man later pleaded guilty to 10 charges, including voluntarily causing hurt using a dangerous weapon, wrongful confinement and drug offences.

His identity cannot be revealed due to a gag order intended to protect the victim, with whom he is no longer in a relationship.

Accused her of getting call from male intern

According to court documents seen by Mothership, the victim and the man were residing together in his flat.

On Sep. 23, 2022, the pair got into an argument over a phone call the girlfriend received.

The man suspected that it was from a male intern at her workplace, when in reality it was from an unknown number.

The man became angry and punched the girlfriend, subsequently tying her to the railing of his bed with a cable tie.

Then, he took a gas lighter refill and poured its flammable contents on her chest.

As he did so, he laughed to himself.

The man then took a gas lighter and ignited the lighter to produce an open flame, which he held close to the victim's chest.

This gave her burn wounds as a result.

In order to appease the accused and escape, the girlfriend lied to him that the call she received earlier was from the male intern.

Thereafter, he untied her, tended to her wounds and cooked for her.

The woman did not seek medical attention.

Accused her of having affair with godfather

In another incident four months later on Jan. 5, 2023, the man got angry after the girlfriend tried to leave the house to meet her godfather.

He stopped the woman from leaving by pulling her shirt collar and dragging her into his bedroom.

While in the bedroom, he slapped her on the face multiple times and questioned if she was having an affair with her godfather.

Although the woman denied it, he attacked her with his hands and legs and she fell to the ground.

He then reached out for a dismantled mop handle and used it to hit her.

The woman was unable to get up from the ground as she was in pain.

The man continued his abuse, asking her to strip naked and she complied out of fear.

He grabbed a bra and used it to tie her hands together while he used a pair of shorts to tie her ankles together.

The man then used a metal saw to press against her thighs and continue to grill her on her relationship with her godfather.

The court documents noted that although he did not use much force with the saw against her thighs, the woman suffered cut wounds as a result of his actions.

He saw that her wrists had turned purple due to a lack of blood circulation, and he untied the bra around her wrists.

However, he did not stop his abuse.

He swapped the saw for a wooden hammer and hit her on her thigh and head several times.

He told the victim to beg him to stop and when she complied, he gave her a pair of scissors to cut the shorts holding her ankles together.

Afterwards, court documents showed that the pair talked and the victim forgave the man and did not lodge a police report.

She also did not seek medical attention for the cut wounds she sustained on her thigh.

Caught for taking drugs

The man was arrested by officers from the Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) on Jan. 30, 2023, at a friend's residence.

The CNB seized numerous drug exhibits at various locations in her residence.

The man later admitted that he had consumed “Ice”, the street name for methamphetamine, that afternoon.

He was since held in police custody and remanded for investigations and examination at the Institute of Mental Health until Feb. 22, 2023.

While he was released on bail on Mar. 4, 2023, he was arrested and produced in court on Jun. 16 after failing to attend his Jun. 13 court session.

He was denied bail and has been in remand since.

Nearly two years later on Jun. 6, 2025, he pleaded guilty to 10 charges and was sentenced to seven years, 11 months and 191 days’ jail and nine strokes of the cane, reported The Straits Times.

A total of 12 other charges were taken into consideration during sentencing.

An additional enhanced sentence of 472 days was imposed, as the offences were committed while he was under a remission order for previous drug-related offences.
