The two men shot dead outside a Cheras shopping mall in Kuala Lumpur on Jun. 17 at around 12:15am had criminal histories, Malaysia police said.

The duo were targeted by gunmen when they returned to their parked car, the Kuala Lumpur Deputy Police Chief, Mohd Yusuf Bin Jan Mohamed revealed.

China Press reported that the identities of the two deceased are Xu Luguang, 44, and Chi Shizhou, 42.

They were from Sibu and Bintulu, Sarawak, and allegedly had connections with organised crime groups.

Criminal records

Malaysia police revealed that Xu was a wanted person, who had at least four prior criminal records, including one for murder.

Both men were reportedly known figures within gang networks.

There reaffirmed suspicions that the attack along Jalan Loke Yew may have been a targeted hit.

2nd fatal shooting in KL in less than a week

This incident occurred less than a week after a similar deadly shooting in Brickfields on Jun. 13.

Both acts of violence raised public concern over a possible surge in gang-related violence across Kuala Lumpur’s urban hotspots that were not random but targeted and involved gang rivalries.

What happened

Five masked men were allegedly lying in wait for the two victims, and ambushed them as they were walking towards their car in the car park of the shopping complex, according to Free Malaysia Today.

A witness said the five men suddenly ran towards the victims and fired several shots at them, before fleeing in Perodua Alza car.

Both victims suffered several gunshot wounds to the head and body and were pronounced dead at the scene.

China Press also stated that the police recovered 18 shell casings from the scene.

Xu was shot six times, with wounds on his face, head and back, while Chi was shot three times in the chest, back and left side of his body.

Authorities are urging anyone with relevant information or dashcam footage to step forward to assist with the investigation.

People with information on the case should contact Cheras police at 03-9284 5050 or 03-9284 5051 or the Kuala Lumpur police hotline at 03-2115 9999.
