The Saab driver involved in the fatal Tampines accident has been slapped with a new charge on Jun. 9.

Singaporean Muhammad Syafie Bin Ismail, 44, is now facing another charge for his dangerous driving causing grievous hurt to the driver of a van, Chia Tong Chai, 65, and the driver of a car, Muhammad Azril Mahmood, 49.

No plea was taken from Syafie and his next hearing date is on Jun. 26, reported CNA.

5 total charges

The man now faces five charges in total, including dangerous driving causing hurt, reckless driving, and failing to stop after an accident.

His two charges for dangerous driving are related to the six-vehicle accident which killed two people.

The other two charges are related to the overtaking incident involving a white Mercedes.

The accident that happened on Apr. 22, 2024, took the lives of two people, including one Temasek Junior College student.

Background

The accident happened along Bedok Reservoir Road towards Tampines Avenue 4.

Syafie allegedly made an abrupt lane change to overtake a car, causing a "sideswipe collision" that forced the other vehicle to veer left and scrape its tyres against the curb.

He did not stop or provide his particulars after this accident.

Syafie then collided with three cars after failing to stop at a red light.

This is believed to have caused one of the vehicles to spin and hit a van before overturning.

Temasek Junior College student Afifah Munirah Muhammad Azril, 17, who was in this car, later passed away from her injuries.

The van, driven by Chia, had two passengers, including 57-year-old pest control company employee Norzihan Juwahib who passed away.

The other van passenger was injured as well.

The van subsequently collided with a minibus, injuring an 11-year-old boy onboard.

Syafie is also currently facing two civil suits for negligence from the van’s driver and passenger.
