Former Singapore national cricketer and coach Arjun Menon was found dead at home on May 10.

He was 48.

He was "brutally murdered" at his residence in Malawi, East Africa, according to a press statement by the Malawi National Council of Sports (MNCS).

Menon, a Singaporean, had been working in Malawi as its national cricket coach.

Calling the death "tragic and untimely", the MNCS condemned the violence and extended its condolences to Menon's loved ones and the cricket community.

"His commitment, professionalism, and vision were truly inspirational, and his loss is a devastating blow to the entire sporting fraternity in Malawi and beyond," it said.

According to a Facebook post by Malawi-based Nations Publications Limited, Menon was allegedly "attacked by thugs" in Blantyre.

It is not known what the specific cause of death was.

Ambassador for Singapore cricket

The Singapore Cricket Association (SCA) also posted a tribute to Menon.

"A passionate ambassador for Singapore cricket, he carried the Singapore flag with pride wherever he coached," SCA said.

Menon, a former national player who began his sport at Saint Patrick's School, went on to coach the Singapore cricket team from 2015 to 2019.

Notably, he led the team to a gold medal at the 2017 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games — Singapore cricket's second-ever SEA Games title.

He later moved to Malawi to coach and guide the national cricket team there.

"Yet, even overseas, he remained a proud Singaporean, often crediting Singapore’s cricketing journey as the inspiration behind his global work," SCA said.

"Rest in peace, Arjun. Singapore is proud of you."
