Ministers Ong Ye Kung and Chee Hong Tat have sent lawyers' letters to a Facebook user who goes by the name Rich Sng for defamation.

Sng, whose full name is Sng Chia Huat, put up two posts on Facebook regarding photos of the ministers at dinners with Fujian gang member Su Haijin.

On May 8 and May 10, Sng published the posts in which he accused the ministers of "pretending not to know [Su]".

The first post, titled "The Su Haijin Photos are a Global Ad Campaign", was shared over 1,900 times on Facebook.

Both ministers previously responded to allegations surrounding the photos, and clarified that they do not know Su personally.

Will sue Sng if he doesn't apologise or withdraw allegations by May 16

In a May 12 statement sent via their press secretaries to the media, Ong and Chee said Sng accused them of the following:

  • They were aware that Su had broken laws but condoned it
  • They dishonestly pretended not to know Su
  • They were involved in or susceptible to corruption or bribery
  • They are part of a system that protects such criminals

"These allegations are baseless and are false," they said.

"As stated in an earlier joint statement, both ministers do not know Mr Su Haijin personally, and did not have any contact with him before and after the dinners."

The ministers have since asked Sng to apologise, withdraw his false allegations, and pay damages.

These damages will be donated to charity.

If Sng does not do so by May 16, the ministers will sue him to clear their names and uphold the government's reputation.
