Prime Minister Lawrence Wong said he has spoken to Workers' Party (WP) secretary-general Pritam Singh after the general election.

He acknowledged that WP put up a strong slate of candidates and put up a "tough fight", echoing his line of praise from the post-election press conference on May 4.

PM Wong noted that WP will increase its parliamentary presence from 10 seats to 12, and that Singh will continue as Leader of the Opposition.

"I look forward to the contributions of the Workers' Party members in Parliament," he said in his May 5 Facebook post.

Respects opposition presence

Previously, PM Wong said at the People's Action Party's May 4 post-results press conference that he respects the opposition presence in parliament.

"I've always taken their suggestions and views seriously, and I will continue to do so," he said.

He added that the WP, as the best-performing losers in Tampines GRC and Jalan Kayu SMC, will be offered both Non-Constituency Member of Parliament (NCMP) seats.

While the WP has not yet confirmed who it would field for those two seats, party chairman Sylvia Lim said on May 4 that it could be "another opportunity for us to again bring in some new blood if the party should decide to do so”.

This means that — supposing that Jalan Kayu's Andre Low doesn't turn down his seat — the remaining seat could go to one of the party's new faces in Tampines, like Michael Thng or Eileen Chong.
