On May 6, India conducted airstrikes against nine targets in Punjab and Pakistani Kashmir, with Pakistan claiming to have shot down five Indian aircraft.

The airstrikes, called “Operation Sindoor” by India, come nearly two weeks after 26 civilians were killed in Indian-administered Kashmir on Apr. 22.

Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Serif claimed his military shot down five Indian fighter jets, a claim India has not confirmed.

Sharif said India would "suffer the consequences" of launching strikes in Pakistan.

Pakistan's deputy prime minister Ishaq Dar confirmed that the J-10C fighter jets participated in the attack.

He also said the casualties could have been higher.

Saying that there were instructions to only target India jets that had released payloads, Dar said that was "why only five jets were taken down".

"Had the directive been different, nearly 10 to 12 jets would have been struck", he added.
