Police arrest man, 67, for attempted snatch theft of handbag belonging to woman, 73, in Toa Payoh

He was arrested within five hours.

The police arrested a 67-year-old man for his suspected involvement in a case of snatch theft.

On May 28 at about 8:20pm, the police were alerted to the case at Toa Payoh Central, where a man had allegedly attempted to snatch a handbag from a 73-year-old woman.

The victim shouted for assistance and the man fled from the location.

The handbag contained cash, a mobile phone and bank cards with a total value of more than S$1,000.

The identity of the man was established with the aid of images from surveillance and police cameras and he was arrested within five hours of the report.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the man is also believed to be involved in at least three other cases of theft.

The man will be charged in court on May 30 with the offence of snatch theft.

The offence carries an imprisonment term of one to seven years in jail, as well as caning.

The police said they will not tolerate such brazen acts of crime.

Members of the public who encounter such cases are advised to remain calm, take note of the physical appearance and distinctive features of the perpetrator, and call for the police as soon as possible.
