PAP appoints Desmond Lee as chairman, Ong Ye Kung as treasurer

The People's Action Party (PAP) Central Executive Committee (CEC), the decision-making body of the party, has appointed Education Minister Desmond Lee as chairman with effect today (May 29, 2025).

Lee replaces Heng Swee Keat, who retired from politics.

Meanwhile, Health Minister Ong Ye Kung is now treasurer, taking over Home Affairs Minister K Shanmugam, who remains in the CEC. Ong was previously the assistant treasurer.

National Development Minister Chee Hong Tat is now assistant treasurer. Acting Minister for Muslim Affairs Faishal Ibrahim is co-opted as a new member.

The PAP said in a press release: "The CEC expressed its appreciation to out-going chairman Mr Heng Swee Keat for his years of leadership and service to the Party and Singapore, and wished him a fulfilling retirement from politics."

Other roles

Faishal is also the chair of the Malay Affairs Bureau. Meanwhile, Minister of State for Trade and Industry and National Development Alvin Tan is now chair of Young PAP, taking over Senior Minister of State for Education and Sustainability and the Environment Janil Puthucheary.
