The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Singapore has put out a statement regarding the death of Pope Francis, the 266th Pope of the Catholic Church.

In their statement, the archdiocese said they were "deeply saddened" by Pope Francis' passing and described him as a "model" of mercy and compassion.

The archdiocese said:

"He was a champion of unity and hope, not just for Catholics, but for the world, especially the weak, the marginalised, and the poor.

He spoke for displaced refugees and victims of war, and urged world leaders to seek peace through dialogue and justice."

Emphasised dialogue between religious communities in Singapore

The archdiocese noted that during his state visit to Singapore, at a meeting with youths from different faiths, Pope Francis had emphasised dialogue and understanding between the religious communities.

He had also urged the youths of today be "courageous" and open to feedback in order to have sincere dialogue with one another.

In addition, Pope Francis' constant call for inclusivity led to a church which "welcomed all".

"His actions inspired the faithful to be the face of Christ to others and reach out to those on the fringes of society," they said.

The archdiocese also highlighted the Pope's environmental advocacy, noting that he had urged global action to tackle climate change and called on the public to be "responsible stewards" of the Earth.

Continued attending Holy Week liturgies in his final days

In his final days, Pope Francis continued attending Holy Week liturgies and meeting Catholics, the archdiocese added.

"The Holy Father continued his work of preaching joy and sharing Christ’s all-embracing love," the archdiocese said.

They concluded:

"We thank the Lord for His gift of Pope Francis and his service on earth. Let us pray for the repose of his soul as we commend him into the embrace of our Heavenly Father.

May God grant him eternal rest and the reward of eternal life with the saints in heaven."
