Food chain operator Koufu will be rolling out colour-coded price labels at all its economy rice stalls by the end of 2025.

This initiative, in partnership with the Consumers Association of Singapore (CASE), is intended to make prices more transparent for consumers, CASE said in a Mar. 24 release.

The colour-coded labels will denote separate categories such as meat, seafood, vegetables and premium items and their corresponding prices.

The four colour codes are green (vegetable), orange (meat), blue (seafood) and white (premium items). Prices of the first three categories will be displayed on a price indicator sheet at the stall, while the prices of premium items will be written on the labels themselves.

The initiative was launched on Mar. 24 at the Koufu outlet at Plantation Plaza in Tengah, by CASE president Melvin Yong and Koufu chief financial officer Chua Sher Lin.

Posting about the launch on his Facebook page, Yong said that having such labels will allow consumers to make informed choices and prevent any potential disputes over prices.

"Many consumers buy their meals from economy rice stalls, and it is common to hear complaints about the actual price of the meal after the consumer has selected the dishes. The dispute often centred on the ambiguity of the prices of the dishes on display," Yong explained.

Yong's post showed that a price indicator sheet had been put up at "Hong Le Mixed Veg Rice Stall" to inform consumers of the pricing.

In the release, Koufu said it aims to implement the initiative in all 77 Koufu foodcourts and coffeeshops by end-2025.

"This initiative will benefit both customers by making it easier to understand pricing and choices, and stall operators by promoting fair and clear pricing,” Chua said.

In his post, Yong said he hoped Koufu's partnership with CASE will lay the groundwork for other economy rice stalls in Singapore to do the same.
