Getting worked up over something hypothetically as humongous as a hippopotamus?

Three people in Singapore were seen engaged in an exchange of words over what appeared to be a hullabaloo over spilled boxes containing hippopotamuses.

If the above sentence does not make any sense, here is a video shot by a person who apparently happened to be at the scene to witness the situation.

What video showed

A man in blue, who is apparently a Lazada delivery personnel, could be seen trying to gather numerous pink boxes that have fallen all over the ground.

The distinctive pink Lazada logo is visible on the brown carton box.

Each pink box appeared to contain a hippopotamus item, believed to be a savings box.

However, while trying to gather the fallen goods, a person riding a bicycle appeared impatient with the process of gathering the items.

The cyclist’s way appeared to have been blocked.

A woman, who was also at the scene, then appeared to be grimacing, as she engaged the cyclist in an exchange of words.

She appeared irritated by him.

However, instead of deescalating the situation, the cyclist and woman appeared to up the ante by continuing to exchange choice words and glares.

Other videos online

Other videos of the commotion were recorded and shared online by others.

They similarly showed two individuals appearing agitated, while a delivery personnel was trying his best to keep it together by picking up the boxes.

Based on the videos showing the scene from various angles, it was estimated that there were about 100 pink boxes in total on the ground.

Responses

Most of the comments and reactions to the videos of the incident were by people who were puzzled by what they saw, while attempting to make educated guesses, albeit judgey ones.

As the cause of the dispute was undisclosed and the two parties appeared to be quarrelling, people assumed it was the cyclist’s fault.

Interestingly, the items that were lying on the ground did not draw any curious queries about their purpose.

Commenters were also preoccupied with pinning the blame on the individuals involved, suggesting that it was people’s hippocampus that have been affected, preventing them from learning how to deal with others in a civilised fashion and be better people.

The cyclist was singled out for looking impatient.

Follow-up to drama

Lo and behold, the drama did not end there.

It turns out that a few thousand people in Singapore subsequently ended up each receiving one of the hippopotamus saving banks – apparently at random.

Unlike a piggy bank, each Hippo Bank – as it is called – was delivered to the door of each recipient via the Lazada van.

Each Hippo Bank provided the recipient with a chance to visit the Lazada microsite that offered vouchers to be claimed.

It also provided an exclusive opportunity to win S$500 in cash if they post a picture of the Hippo Bank on social media.

The Hippo Bank was launched in conjunction with Lazada’s Epic Birthday Sale as a way for shoppers to find out first-hand that they do not need to break the bank to shop with Lazada, given the best prices and deals around.

But the offer is not just for the selected few.

For the rest of the consumers, they can head to the microsite, where shoppers can enjoy the best prices with up to 90 per cent off LazFlash deals, and an extra 15 per cent off seller vouchers and more, as part of Lazada’s Epic Birthday Sale, which starts on Mar. 24 at 8pm.

This birthday anniversary sale is the largest Lazada event of the year, with the promise of better prices, which is different from the usual double digit dates sales.

Hip hip h̶ippopotamus hooray?
