Do you enjoy kiwis and apples? What about kiwi skin and apple cores?

The Ministry of Health (MOH) and Sengkang General Hospital (SKGH) recently shared about the nutritional benefits of certain fruits' and vegetables' skins and cores.

The information was presented by SKGH dietician Marabelle Tong, who gave us the lowdown on the skins of kiwis and the cores of apples.

First up: Kiwi skin

Eating an entire kiwi, along with its skin, increases your fibre intake by 50 per cent. This helps with bowel movement and keeps you full longer, said Tong.

That's not all.

A quick search online also reveals that kiwi skin is also rich in:

  • vitamin E (an essential nutrient that cannot be produced by the body),
  • vitamin B9 (for healthy cell growth)
  • antioxidants (which, according to Healthline, is present in higher concentrations in the skin compared to the flesh)

Now, the fuzzy texture of kiwi skin might be off-putting to some.

If that worries you but you're still keen to give kiwi skin a try, go for the gold kiwi which has smoother skin with less fuzz.

It might be just a tad more palatable.

On to apple cores

If you are not already accustomed to eating apple cores, perhaps this might change your mind.

"Apple cores are packed with good bacteria that can improve your gut health," said Tong.

According to McGill University, these good bacteria are also known as probiotics, which are present in other gut-boosting foods like yoghurt, kefir, and kimchi.

The core of an apple has been found to contain the highest concentration of probiotics.

Well, what about the poison in apple seeds? This was also pointed out by some Facebook users in the comment section of the video.

Apple seeds contain a compound called amygdalin, which breaks down and releases cyanide.

However, you will first need to chew the seeds thoroughly.

And in order to get cyanide poisoning from apple seeds, you will need to ingest about a cupful of them.

One apple contains only about 10 seeds or so. Hardly enough to land you in the hospital.

So, would you try kiwi skin and apple cores? Alternatively:
