A 41-year-old Singaporean taxi driver was sentenced to two weeks’ jail and disqualified from holding any driving licence for five years after running a red light and colliding with another taxi.
The driver, Loo Junjie Jordan, pleaded guilty to one out of two charges under the Road Traffic Act on Jun. 9, Shin Min Daily News reported.
The other charge was taken into consideration during sentencing.
Ran the red light
In charge sheets seen by Mothership, the incident occurred on May 8, 2024, at about 11:42 am.
Loo was driving along Jalan Kayu towards the Tampines Expressway (TPE).
Upon approaching the junction, the traffic light had turned red.
Loo proceeded straight and collided head-on with a yellow taxi coming from his right.
The traffic light was green in the yellow taxi driver's favour.
The impact caused the yellow taxi to spin around and come to a stop facing the wrong direction on the road.
Injuries
Loo, his passenger, and the other taxi driver, were conveyed to the hospital.
The other taxi driver sustained fractured ribs and was discharged on the same day of the incident.
She was also given 14 days of medical leave.
Loo’s passenger sustained knee abrasions and complained of dizziness and nausea.
She was given three days of medical leave.
Hearing
According to Shin Min, dashcam footage was played in court by the prosecution.
The prosecution said Loo has no prior criminal record and that he was guilty of running the red light.
They argued that the red light had been red for at least 7 seconds before he ran it, and that resulted in an accident injuring his passenger and the other taxi driver.
Loo’s lawyer argued that the injured taxi driver's fractured rib was unlikely to be a permanent injury.
He claimed Loo was distracted as he was talking to his passenger, which led him to run the red light.
Loo pleaded for leniency.
