A nine-year-old boy was allegedly filmed without consent while using a toilet at Jurong Point, with his father subsequently lodging a police report over the incident.
The mall management is currently looking into the matter and police investigations are ongoing.
Reached a phone under the gap between the stalls
The incident came to public attention after the boy's father, Michael Huang, recounted the experience on Instagram.
In the video, the boy's father said the incident took place at around 3pm on May 17.
His son had emerged from the toilet visibly distressed, he recalled, and had told him he noticed someone inserting a mobile phone into his cubicle.
According to Huang, his son had been using the third cubicle when someone in the adjacent stall reached a phone under the gap between the stalls for several seconds before pulling it back.
The father described feeling helpless as he watched his son recount the ordeal in tears, and contacted the police immediately.
Speaking to Mothership, Huang said his family has chosen to focus on open communication in the aftermath of the incident, treating it as an opportunity to teach his son about situational awareness rather than allowing fear to take hold.
He noted that the conversations have since brought the family closer and helped his son feel more secure.
He also urged parents to actively teach their children that they have every right to leave any situation that feels uncomfortable, and to report it to a trusted adult immediately.
Children, he said, may not instinctively recognise suspicious behaviour, and an unsettling experience might not register to them as dangerous.
Suspect left the scene before police arrived
In response to Mothership's queries, the police confirmed they were alerted to a case of voyeurism at 1 Jurong West Central on May 17.
The suspect had left the scene before police arrived, and efforts to trace the suspect are underway.
Investigations are ongoing.
In a statement to the media, a spokesperson from Link Asset Management, who owns the mall, stated that they are currently looking into the matter and assisting the relevant authorities with their investigations.
"The safety, privacy and well-being of our shoppers and tenants are extremely important to us," the spokesperson said, adding that the mall is unable to comment further at this time as police investigations are ongoing.
