A 28-year-old Taiwanese man from Keelung allegedly stabbed and killed his mother with a knife over a NT$200 (S$8) dispute at their home, before later falling to his death from a residential building.

The incident occurred at Mingde 2nd Road in Qidu District, Keelung, on May 30.

Taiwanese police received a report at around 5:34pm about a family dispute, reported Taiwan's Central News Agency.

Officers and firefighters arrived at the location to find the man, Wang Nan, seriously injured after a reported fall from height.

He was rushed to the hospital and later pronounced dead.

Authorities later found Wang's 59-year-old mother, seriously injured after entering the home.

She was also conveyed to the hospital but died shortly after.

Dispute centred around S$8 jacket

According to the Taiwanese newspaper United Daily News (UDN), the argument was believed to have been triggered by a sun protection jacket the mother bought for Wang's older brother.

Wang allegedly became agitated after he believed his mother favoured his older brother and was biased in purchasing the jacket for him.

UDN also reported that Wang was unemployed and had often argued with his mother.

According to Taiwan's Central News Agency, during the quarrel, Wang allegedly strangled his mother before stabbing her with a knife.

Afterwards, he reportedly headed to the rooftop and fell off.

According to Yahoo Taiwan, Wang's older brother was also at home during the argument and reportedly tried to intervene.

Taiwanese police said that they are still investigating the incident.

The case will be referred to the Keelung District Prosecutors' Office for further investigations.

Taiwanese police also urged the public to manage family conflicts in a calm manner and to seek help instead of letting disputes escalate.
